I saw 'Milk' today

Posted by AlmightyHans Dec. 22, 2008 @ 3:13 AM EST

Well a movie about the 'gay rights' movement. If you don't know the story, here's a plot summary:

"After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board."

It was a good movie, and not because of the gay parts. lol. I thought it was an interesting story about a brave guy that fought for something he believed him for the sake of liberating 'his people' and many other people. And i don't mean brave as in coming out of the closet. This guy was sent death threats if he gave speeches, but he still got up and did it.

And what perfect timing for the recent Prop 8 surprise. Human rights. That's the subject this movie dwells on and the historical events dwelled upon. But, one thing I cannot come to comprehend is the reactions gays had. And this not only applies to gays, but everyone. This movie is but one example of how extremist, radical, impulsive, blind, thoughtless and cattle-like humans are. On the homophobe and gay side...

Yes, it's ridiculous to say that gays, if allowed to teach in schools, will influence children into becoming gay. Like, very well stated in the movie by Mr. Milk himself, "If that were true there would be lot more nuns right now" (keep in mind this is 1978 when catholic school nuns were more common).

But yes... yes it is indeed ridiculous to demand for 'human' rights by roaming the streets nude or topless, toppling trash cans and so on. Are you kidding me? If you want human rights, act like a human. Also, these gays were trying to show the world that being gay isn't a negative aspect of one's self. You really think walking nude, and wreaking havoc is the way to show that? No.

I shared sympathy for Harvey Milk's character. Because as he said, he wasn't fighting to get a job, he was fighting to get a life. To give all these gays he could a life. And he gave it all his might, and his effort. However, I couldn't have much sympathy for the majority of those gays acting like mad cattle. You might be who you are, but that doesn't mean you get the right of getting away with uncommon decency. Straight men in the celebration of love (Valentine's Day) don't strip naked by the truck loads to show how much they love sex. Essentially what i'm trying to say is how pissed it makes me seeing all these people fighting for something reasonable within these 'revolutions' they always loose touch of their meaning for whatever it might be they're fighting for. And react, instead of reason.

I guess, ever since i got to 'the liberal, individual Bay Area' I've realized many things:

It's not liberal. It's just segregation of millions of little clans (basically). You can be whatever you want (or join whatever clan you want) but as long as you don't step into any other's. So it's an illusion of individuality. It's like... 'groups of individuals'... which is a hilarious contradiction. the liberal aspect is just another illusion, because they aren't cool with people outside their clan, maybe casually cool, but i'm talking friendship. And this brings me to my point. Being so segregated into so many groups just makes a bunch of herds. and these cattle don't think for themselves, but react. The massive bodies... amoebas of people, the masses.

Ladies and gentlemen. There is no middle ground. Humanity is just an endless pendulum going from one extreme to the other... it sickens me.

So if there's anything i can ask... it's to listen, observe, think for yourself... and don't try to change other's opinions. Let them observe you and listen to you and take to consideration what they agree with from your words.

There is no good or bad in this world. No one does things consciously bad, they always see a benefit to one's self, in other words 'good'. The only people who do consciously bad things are psychopaths. The only thing there is in this world is your perspective. and everyone else's is different from one another and even those think they're doing good, too. Sometimes.

There is only one law:

Don't steal.

That applies to stealing a life, stealing someone's happiness, someone's virginity, someone's wife/husband, child, etc. etc. etc. And that can be summarized in one word...

Respect.

Merry Christmas,
-HVH

It's things like Prop 9 and, well, baseless hate in general that make my blood boil with furious rage. What right does anyone have to force their beliefs on people just because of something trivial like skin color, religion, or sexuality? It's like having a vote on whether or not to kill everyone with brown hair; what kind of self-important, ignorant filth could vote in favor of it?

Live and let live, man.

BTW, great movie. Sean Penn was brilliant.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:24 AM AlmightyHans responds:

i think comparing it to killing people with brown hair is a bit too extreme. i see it more as this pathetic desperation of keeping what people find uncomfortable below them in any way possible.

or would that be a group of individuals thing again :P
we can call it the 'common sense' revolution.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:27 AM AlmightyHans responds:

no we don't call it squat. that's another problem about americans. they always name their groups and the groups have certain rules... and not everyone agrees with those rules even if they are in that group so they infinitely divide their group. so stop calling it certain beliefs and start calling it your own beliefs. Your own, two words that mean no one else. no group, just you.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:29 AM AlmightyHans responds:

didn't find it boring, but it wasn't perfect. It was kind of scattered scene wise and some scenes that were potentially good, didn't give themselves enough time to absorb. in the end i have few complaints. was enjoyable.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 12:32 PM PsychoKillerHare says:

Oh man,
this is the most intelligent thing I've anyone say in a long while.
I agree with everything you've said, my friend.
"Groups of Individuals"
How people will pick a side in the name of individuality,
only because other people do it.
and the perspective bit,
I've been living by that for the longest time.

I find it rather sad how people can dilute things
with their mindlessness and thoughtlessness.
How people pick sides of often times rather noble causes,
but not because they're noble causes, nor for any other real reason.
You can always tell who those people are, when they duck out because
the going gets tough.

And I think Im ranting.
So I'll leave this at that.
You gots a good mind boyy.
Dont let them dilute it.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:30 PM AlmightyHans responds:

well it's completely cool to post a rant reply. my post is a rant anyways. plus you're not ranting obnoxiously, so it's cool.

gay pride parade is bad!? ummmm helllo, folsom street fair

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:38 PM AlmightyHans responds:

holy shit... i had no idea about this 'folsom street fair'... that's just wrong. that' nothing to celebrate publicly about. god damn, people are lowly loosing touch of respect. Those kind of things are personal, an especially sexual fetishes. That's personal shit.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 1:05 PM Zombie-Pimp says:

I see you've read The Kite Runner. Haven't watched the movie but I want to, I can't find any friends who want to watch it with me. They just make fun of me if I bring up that I want to see it.
Thing is, I HATED Brokeback Mountain, another so-called gay rights movie. It was a terrible movie in my opinion, which only got all its hype because of the gayness, and I'm afraid that all the hype that Milk is getting is because of similar reasons.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:42 PM AlmightyHans responds:

i haven't seen Brokeback Mountain for the similar reason that it feels like it's the gay part that only makes it stand out, and i am not thrilled to see a movie that depends on only one element of it to be 'good'. Milk though, wasn't a terrible movie, but yes people are going to like it for the wrong reasons. the blind, stupid, cattle reasons. It was enjoyable to watch, a nice story about an interesting man. It wasn't boring and it was pretty intense towards the end. But by chance this thing came out with perfect timing with prop 8 and such, giving people more reason to praise a movie with an element fresh in their minds to agree with.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 2:49 PM Oney says:

I drink Milk. Ok?

Dec. 22, 2008 | 4:02 PM Lalo says:

I mostly agree with everything you said, but I think you're being slightly pessimistic. There are as many intelligent, altruist persons as there are shitty, selfcentered ones. They're just more discreet. Also, there IS middle ground, ir so I'd like to think. I still have hope things will eventually change, we need more and more solidarity each time. There's no need to be hateful towards anything.. not even towards hateful people (THAT WOULD IRONIC LULZ).

I guess trying to fix all the bad in the world is what gives many people a reason to live, better to have a reason and fight for it, or even laugh at it, than loose all hope and live a shitty depressing life.

Funny how we humans are pretty much the only species on earth that fight for reasons other than food or danger. or life itself. for religion, for territories, for different opinions. I still believe we can change tho. we WILL change :D

Dont let naked gay people on streets sadden you :)

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:51 PM AlmightyHans responds:

One thing you'll come to discover is that no, there aren't as many intellegent people ass shitty ones. And that's not pessimism, that's just reality. And yes there is middle ground but people can't settle on it because when you act on impulse, which is what most people do, you're narrows down to two decisions, One side or the other.

I have hope they will change, but humans have been like this since the beginning of time. I don't think it will change any sooner or later. I'm starting to think that the human species is a bunch of giant bodies, masses of people. and the reason why it's mostly impulsive radical people is because being like that brings people together (social groups). and naturally the biggest group is the strongest, and for Humans it's just this infinite battle of these amoeba body masses to keep clashing and clashing until they find what will result in the most 'dominant' of these mass bodies.

lol 'change'! you've got some Obama fever? :P

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:01 PM AlmightyHans responds:

seriously, you can be homophobic. that's your own opinion, but don't let it influence some one else's life. keep it to yourself. And you know what if you're a parent go ahead and teach t to your kids, parents should have the right to teach anything to their kids, it's their decision and right. Just also teach your kids to keep it to themselves as well. that applies for everyone and everything.

I never understood the whole gay pride thing. It's like, if straight people went parading in the street for a "straight pride" festival, people would be all up in their face about it.

You're right though, people are too attached to their opinions. I've recently learned that there's nothing more liberating that realizing there's no reason to have opinions about anything.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:06 PM AlmightyHans responds:

lol: "I've recently learned that there's nothing more liberating that realizing there's no reason to have opinions about anything."

that's a good sentence. Honestly though. I think straight people should have their own parade, so that they stop complaining, because no one would be up in their face. In fact I think it could be cool. Thing is, gays, like jews because they were so excluded throughout a good portion of human history, they were forced to live in secrecy or in one way shape or form, live together.

because they lived like this, they learned to work together and set aside all their other differences and let themselves be united by their one similarity, no matter what race color one was. So lots of gays have this talent of organizing events and such real well, maybe straight people are too lazy to make their own, but honestly i don't see why not, you guys just make a parade and stop worrying about it.

"stealing" someone's virginity. meaning, taking it from them when they don't want to loose it yet. A form of rape.

Well said, my friend. From a psychological and philisophical standpoint, I agree with you whole-heartedly. Everything is subjective. Everything in life is debatable, including this statement. Good and evil are a farce; they are mere concepts we have created as an attempt to instill a sense of order into this chaotic existence. I salute you on this well-written and well-argued, not to mentioned rather unbiased, argument on this important subject.

Dec. 23, 2008 | 12:08 AM Wholyish says:

I live in Florida, so I've seen some stuff similar to what's going on over there because of the Amendment 2 here. Not as radical, but still some similar stuff.

People don't want to understand that things aren't black and white, that there is a gray area, because the human mind wants to understand and explain everything.

Besides, it sickens me that this subject is an issue, considering marriage was originally a religious institution and not a government one. The government took over it for documentation purposes, and now they're simply flexing muscle. If a man and woman, or a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, or whomever, take the vow of marriage, that is a vow to God and/or eachother (depending on your religious beliefs), not the country.

Dec. 23, 2008 | 12:27 AM AlmightyHans responds:

true but marriage has become an affiliation with the government. And outside of god's realm i think any two people should be able to not only share their life but financial life as well.
