One Shot Reviews

Posted by AlmightyHans Mar. 26, 2009 @ 11:56 AM EDT

First off,

I'd like to thank those who helped out my little starting business by purchasing the "One Shot" comic book collaborative project.

However, It's felt a little mysterious. I guess I'm used to the Newgrounds system in that I instantly receive feedback through reviews. I would like for those who purchased to write a review of it. Give me an idea of what you thought as a first issue for ODD Comics. This way I can make sure the next one is better.

So go ahead, spill the beans below.

Is it still there, cause I need a copy. Seriously. Comics!
Also, hey. Sup?

Mar. 26, 2009 | 12:19 PM nathanielmilburn says:

Only problem I had was some of the images were a bit blurry/pixelated. If you can't get good quality images of that image, I'd take it out and find another artist to make something.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 1:10 PM AlmightyHans responds:

true, but in that case, because it's the first issue, i couldn't realize which were pixelated until i received the printed issues. so those two comics came out slightly pixeled.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 12:40 PM Luis says:

I agree with nathan. My only issue was with the pixelated ones.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 12:46 PM Nogfish says:

I wished I hadn't rushed my piece so much, I got mine in at the original deadline and felt like I could've done much much better

Hopefully I'll get a chance to redeem myself in da future!

Thanks for the copy of it btw

talk to me and there's a chance you might.

Pretty swell read, although there were like two that really shouldn't have been in there.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 1:05 PM just2pale says:

Maybe next time you should have a continuous story, with each artist doing a part, instead of random short pieces that do not relate or expand upon each other.

I agree with the others too about the blurred images. Text was an issue to read on a few pages, because of font size and being blurred.

Good shot at your first comic though... I liked it.

Count me in if you do another... Ass!.. I mean.. Bro!

Mar. 26, 2009 | 1:20 PM nathanielmilburn says:

you could always print each page out as a test run at like kinkos or something and see how it would turn out.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 6:35 PM AlmightyHans responds:

now i know how to detect what prints will look like before hand. it's not an issue any longer ;)

Mar. 26, 2009 | 1:53 PM GENIUSisOHMS says:

I thought it was, for a first comic, a relatively impressive attempt, so I'm pretty pleased I was a part of it. Moving on from the bias: the pixelated issues have already been flagged up, but I agree with just2pale's suggestion; a continuous story in future would keep a welcomed continuity to the comic, and would be an interesting display of different artists' interpretations of a topic.

The "One Shot" comic series (first edition) Review

****/*****
(4/5 stars)

Though a bit pricey to some - this comic provides "previews" of what's to come from these amazing artists from around the world. And should one of these artist become famous - owning their 'first' published works will become a valuable treasure.

The art is stylish, new, morbid, humorous, and quite thought-provoking.

The comic begins with a most interesting comic panel titled "2084".

According to this art piece by Julio C. Lopes...

"The yearis 2084. Originality is a thing of the past. We have become immune to the human efforts of individuals. Exploring and experimenting has become a taboo. Everything has become a cliche, kitch and overdone. To be creative I need to let go of everything i've seen."

The philosophy demonstrated in the first panel explains that many of todays comics and art pieces are suffering from lack of individuality and originality. And it sends a strong message to artists who are not afraid to create.

The "One Short" comic series is all about that kinda of bull-shit.

:P

Mar. 26, 2009 | 6:37 PM AlmightyHans responds:

wow, thanks. i truly appreciate your positive feedback. I was surprised and amazed at Julio's page. I thought it had an amazing point and felt it would be a good start to the whole comic.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 3:39 PM Spite says:

I haven't bought it yet but, I can tell you its a bit pricey... 15 dollars for about 20 pages? That's not even including the shipping :(

I'm still going to buy one cause I believe in supporting these kind of things but, mini comics like these usually sell for like 4 or 5 bucks.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 6:38 PM AlmightyHans responds:

it's 32 pages. and they come in plastic cases with cardboard. and the first 50 were stamped. ;)

Mar. 26, 2009 | 3:57 PM Naxster says:

Liked the cover and backboard. The plastic did end up saving the comic. One of the issues I had was at the end of the book there is an index but the pages are not numbered. I did figure it out based on the names though.

As for other users saying that it should be a continuous story I don't necessarily agree. I bought a collaborative piece expecting a mix-up of things. Frankly I viewed it more as a comic like in a newspaper where the stories didn't need to intermingle. I also feel that having a continuous story would detract from the individual artists. I'm not saying you shouldn't make one like that but at that point see my above comment bout numbering so your artists don't get lost in the story.

Good job to you and all who worked on the comic book.

Mar. 26, 2009 | 6:42 PM AlmightyHans responds:

yeah, i considered a continuous story, but i felt that being the first attempt at something like this, i thought people would get into it easier if they had to worry about less (like keeping it consistent).

I loved the one in the back with the kitty kat :3
I liked the format, i did notice some of the comics had spelling or gramatical errors though. Also make a second one :D

Mar. 26, 2009 | 5:14 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

a big BOOOOO to the 'continuity' idea

maybe you guys havent read Flight or Jellyfist, but a one-shot comic is exactly this. a pile of shorts.

what you're suggesting is like going to a bunch of short film directors and telling them they should make a long-format film together.

noone would agree on the plot and it would be so bland and awful by the end. the term "too many hands spoil the pot" is very accurate when it comes to comics, cartoons, and film.

its why most collabs stink
and its why marvel and dc's current comic runs are almost nonsensical due to all the various continuity's and elseworlds that have to be adhered to for the comic's storyline to not clash with the 15 other runs that other artists are doing

i dont get WHY people would rather have one loooong story than a bunch of short ones.
or for that matter, why people would want a one-shot comic to be made in that format

its like making a movie called "LOUD NOISES" and having it be blank film.
it goes completely against the whole ideal behind the production.

ugh.

Well said! :D

Mar. 26, 2009 | 5:22 PM LiLg says:

I like the idea about having each artist tell a story, but I'd also like if each page could tell it's own story. A bunch of the pages just felt like splash filler pages.

she havent received it yet, i remeber that one stuff from findland took 1 and half month

Mar. 27, 2009 | 7:22 AM GENIUSisOHMS says:

ZSL, I think the continuity idea would be an interesting future development. For a one shot comic, several different shorts makes sense, I wasn't suggesting that it should have replaced the idea, but should be considered later. The expression 'too many cooks spoil the broth' is true to most circumstances, but in that case cut down in the number of artists in the next collab if it were to be a problem.

I absolutely loved it. The only part I didn't like, was "Nathans fun chunk of comics" I thought the top half was good, but farther down I couldn't read anything without getting close to the page.

I can't wait for the next issue.

Your joy ones were pretty hilarious.

Apr. 7, 2009 | 5:01 PM Five3 says:

Just piggy backin on nathan & luis - "pixelated/low quality" image for the one artist's work. Other than that, I found the concept pretty cool, granted some artists' work was more appealing and understandable than others but I don't necassarily consider that a negative.

Overall, keep crankin out the same; just with uniform HD images and you'll be a success.

Apr. 7, 2009 | 7:31 PM KupaMan says:

The only problem was with some of the print quality on high detailed pages. Retards like me didn't think about the fact that heavy use of gradation, for instance, does not print very nicely. For future One Shots, I'd make everyone simplify their color blending and shit. And maybe make swatches of which colors print well and which ones don't.

Overall, though, it was really well done. Most of the book was very nice, and the only places it ever sagged was in the shittiness of some people's entries.

Zekey's on the ball with the continuity thought, it'd be a bit awkward, and stupid. Alright, it'd be completely awkward and stupid. I'm a fag, I read the Swain's copy. I'll buy one when I'm at the office next time. Sorry.

Apr. 9, 2009 | 7:10 PM xlh2000 says:

I was somewhat dissapointed with the first one.Im a fast reader so i petty much new that i was gonna finish fast but took me less than minute because there were comics that had little or no words at all.so please have more comics thats more than just pictures and please drop the price.$15 dollors for a 20 page book is really (let me put this lighty)stupid.

Apr. 11, 2009 | 8:32 AM MindChamber says:

I think its overpriced, a comic like that should be 10 bucks tops.
especially if none of the artists are getting a cut.

Probably need to cut out that "comicPress" stuff and go to a real printer , and then fold those bad boys yourself.

Apr. 12, 2009 | 4:42 PM Slick says:

It's nice to physically own something compiled by people on the site. I can't think of much to say, apart from some pixellated art which you've explained, and where you're going next with the comic. Just wondering is it gonna be a continued collaberation or be as the name states 'one shot'? And maybe if you're thinking about continued comic collabs, a fully fledged story with guest writers, aritists, the works. Or something like 2000ad, with a few ongoing stories throughout the issues.
