I did mine as a side view because that was the easiest way for me to lean over the junk next to my scanner. Will that work?

not necessarily. it's like staring at the sun. you can look at it but for too long its bad. if you scan your face 50 times in a row im sure it'd screw it up. but you dont need to have your eyes open :P
