"SPLICE" a Review by Hans Van Harken

Posted by AlmightyHans - June 8th, 2010

I'm scared of spoiling anything so I'll copy paste the Synopsis for the movie.

"director Vincenzo Natali offers up another visual feast with this sci-fi thriller starring acclaimed actors Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. SPLICE follows a pair of scientists who have found success with creating genetic hybrids of various animals. When they attempt to add human DNA to the their formula, the results are both surprising and potentially destructive."

"CUBE" I can comfortably say if my favorite Thriller of all time. Sadly the director Vincenzo Natali doesn't have much under his belt, and I have been craving to see more of his work. He blew me away with Splice.

SPLICE is comforting to me in many ways. It's a movie that tackles one of my favorite genres, one that I thought had been dead since the late 90's. I guess a good way of referring to it is the "Science Gone Wrong" genre. There's been a lot of those recently, but they tend to be Apocalyptic. To me that changes it. Rather than "Matrix", or "Terminator", or any of those Apocalyptic scaled stories, SPLICE is more like "The Fly", "The Thirteenth Floor", "Event Horizon" or "From Beyond".

Those movies mentioned tend to have more of a campy tone. Like "Mad Scientist" feel to it, more or less in each of those obviously. The first great thing Splice does is set up the story with characters that are more grounded, and yes, isn't afraid to have fun with itself but treat its situations without cheesiness. For example, the Facility that the main character's work in is named with the initials N.E.R.D. This might seem campy, but actually perfectly illustrates the type of people that work there. These aren't up tight bland scientists, nor are they eccentric crazy scientists type. Like I said, they're young, grounded people who happen to be biology geniuses.

SPLICE clearly deals with gene splicing. Now, what this means is these scientists are trying to basically create and grow organisms like vegetables. This is very contemporary and new to our generation. And with something that concerns manipulating something with as many variables as life, so many things can be unpredictable and scary. This movie delivers in setting those tones.

In fact this movie is so dense in undertones and themes. I can't even begin to list them. It's the kind of movie that I'm sure I'll catch things I didn't catch the first time I watched it. I'm going to start listing a few to give you an idea.

There's playing God. Adam and Eve-like relationship. Conflicting morality when breaking new grounds (no pun intended). Parent hood. Male and female roll-reversal. Nature vs. Nurture. Pet vs. Child.

... I can go on forever.

The point is, this isn't just a piece of entertainment. Not just a creature feature about it's thrills. It's saying something and doing it god damn well. The story is so well put together and I feel achieves in spending en Shamalon ough time on each scene. There are lots of twists and turns in the story. But non of them feel like a punch in the nuts. Everything is foreshadowed, everything makes complete sense. It's not an ambiguous movie in structure, and it's especially not ambiguous in the sense where there's nothing there and you need to interpret. In fact, there's so much content there that you need to interpret it yourself. It's my favorite kind of movie. Simple on the outside, complex on the inside.

While I do love this movie, the ending was definitely not disappointing, but something inside me felt it was a bit lacking. It's probably because the last 30 minutes of the movie was hell for me because I had never in my life had to take a leak so god damn bad. I was literally about to give up and pee on the floor.

...Seriously, now that movies are getting longer, they need to bring back the intermission trend. it's retarded. Back in spain long movies had intermissions. you could take a break, smoke talk with your friends about what your thoughts are so far, then go back in.

It's important to note that this movie evolves into a horror movie towards the end. while some of you might find all these themes and undertones a pretentious thing in a movie. with a story tackling such a new phenomenon, i think it's important to start off playing with the possibilities and working its way to a set tonal conclusion... if that makes sense.

But anyways. To wrap up this thing. If you like "Science Gone Wrong" movies, If you like creatures, eerie, movies that create the biggest sense of mixed feelings about things. Watch this movie, it's a fucking classic to me. I think a lot of movies in the future will look back at this one for inspiration.

I've been reading a lot of reviews and i have noticed a lot of the bad reviews are pointing out that the movie was too eerie and didn't know how to handle itself. But I feel they're reflecting on their own emotions while they were watching it. The subject matter is naturally that way. When you set out to make a movie that is morally conflicting, you have to expect to run into those feelings. I think this film made these uncomfortable situations in good taste, as opposed to something like... THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE!

anyways. I'm done.

Doesn't a movie in the past say....1960's something whatever follow a similar theme EXACTLY the same way?

I think it was an episode of the Twilight Zone or something I saw on the SciFi channel.

Either way, I wasn't interested in seeing the movie because I felt the theme was done before.

I've studied the possibilities of creating a quote "super-human" and I cannot really see how one can alter human DNA to the extent of a monster.

MORE than likely, according to the college tour guides of La Serria Medical University, a test tube created human would more than likely wither and become unstable and fall appart....literally!

No one can truly make a artificial womb.

Alterations however with a female volunteer is the way to go. But the risks of both child and mother dying are high, it's still an slow process.

I do see this movie being a classic for horror fans and science fiction fans.

But knowing what I know, it can see that this is science fiction bullshit.

you just rendered your whole comment pointless with your last sentence. Science 'fiction'. dude it's fiction. the whole point it getting a concept or possibility and playing with it. You're missing out on a good story by discarding something for its impossibility. I never found that to be a sturdy argument for anything story related. This movie isn't an article in the news paper. It's a fabrication. What it's trying to say through this fabrication is what matters. I hate quoting this because it sounds so pompous by 'artists use lies to tell the truth.'

I actually just got back from seeing this movie tonight. It was much better than I expected, and didn't realize that it was directed by the same guy who did Cube. I can see a similar sense of humor between the two.

I really liked how the movie didn't take itself too seriously. It understood that the subject matter of the film was kind of campy, and did a really good job running with it while still maintaining a more serious tone to the film.

I agree with you though, I felt like the ending was a little rushed and sadly seems to leave things open to be solved in a sequel, even though I think this movie would be just fine as a one shot.

The main thing I didn't like about it was the whole "crazy mother" side story. It was played up so much that Else (was that her name?) had this horrible mother who abused her and treated her like shit. Then it really only came into play for one scene in the movie, then she just went right back to caring for Dren. I felt like that whole aspect was really interesting, and could have been explored more.

Great movie nonetheless, with an amazing art direction.

I agree it had a great balance between not taking itself too seriously but also not being a cheesy horror flick.

but i have to say the crazy mother thing in the movie was very important. Thats where the whole theme of Nature vs. Nurture comes in. throughout the movie they're genetically implementing all these traits for the creature. But one thing you'll notice is that the woman is trying to not be like her mother, but instinctively she's passing on the cruelty, the way we pass on genes. I feel like it's kind of metaphorical this transition the creature goes through at the end of like the abused child. I almost feel their lack of being prepared as scientists to such a new thing made the creature the monster it is. The whole movie was almost using a SCI FI plot in order to send out messages about human relations. not so much the science. the sci fi was a narrative vessel to deliver the actual basic points of things like parenthood and responsability.

douche

apparently.

Dude, you have no idea how my upbringing was like.

I...could NEVER get my father (who is a scientist) out to go to movies, so I'm essentially quoting what he would say because he hammered science in my head.

He dismissed practically EVERYTHING fiction. So me, being a person who also enjoys fiction was full of contradictions.

But I do enjoy fiction too. But I habitually try to associate the possibility of it being real and how much interest it has for me. The associations of myth, relativity, similarities, facts, ugh....I have both a strong Left and Right brain that it doesn't always work properly.

I'll try to catch it on Itunes, but I've been so busy lately that I'll have to pass the theaters for a while.

well regardless of your upbringing, discarding a sci fi for being fictional isn't the way to approach it. I understand your point of view, though.

Funny thing though just to leave my last comment.

At La Serra University, they have actual mutated babies on display in the exhibition in bottles.

One of them I clearly remember looks EXACTLY like the baby in the previews. Three eyes, seriously.

thats creepy...

No I completely understood the undertones of nurture/nature and its take on parenting as a whole. I just felt the crazy mother side story could have been developed a little more in Else's character, but now that I think about it I think it was fine. There were just so many different ways that it was hammering home the nature/nurture argument that to me it seemed a little overkill, and the crazy mother side story was a little weak as a result. There's so many things going on underneath the main story it's hard to really wrap your head around it all at once. Which isn't a bad thing, but I think certain points they were trying to make might have gotten convoluted because of all the other similar arguments that were brought up in the film.

to be honest i've gotten fucking sick of seeing the commercials, they play like every three seconds.. but i have been curious to see the movie, your review actually makes me really want to see it. ill be sure to check it out, thanks for the review

thats one of the reasons why i dont watch tv. commercials make everything so repetative to the point where it's just not exciting anymore. over kill

copy pasting did not stop you from spoiling anything

i would be tempted to explain details i realized might ruin

cool, glad you liked it.
been looking forward to this for a while.

wow, i must see this

JakBaronKing: The Science Fiction is necessary because helps us to imagine the future. "Julio Verne" wrote a lot of things that was Science Fiction for he´s time, and now they are reality (submarines, travel to the moon, stuff stuff stuff). To create, you need to dream first

What was that movie series where this sexy woman goes around fucking and murdering people because she's a runaway experiment?

Anyway Im pretty sure I'll love this movie. Just gotta go see it.

"SPLICE follows a pair of scientists who have found success with creating genetic hybrids of various animals."

pffft, total ripoff of Mother 3

haha, splice is in no way like Mother 3. the rip-offs that really are rip-ffs are the ones that didn't give the rip-off a new twist... thats a lot a ripoffs....

basically, it's not a ripoff if you've introduced something new to an idea, or gave it another approach.

yeah man i can't wait to see it

I so wanted to see this movie but ticket prices in NY are insane so I'm going to have for it on Netflix.

SPLICE is pretty much a new refresh from all the remake crap I seen so far.

You and I have very similar views on Splice. I like your take on the majority of negative reviews. Most of my friends who saw the movie didn't like it due to the sex scenes thrown in at the end involving Dren. While I was shocked at first with the first one (I could see the second one coming) I did get over it and see why it was included in the plot. Many of my friends found the sex scenes very uncomfortable, and I agree with you that those feelings come from their own insecurities about sex or their emotions about sex and they fail to look at the scenes from a plot perspective.

I wasn't going to see this movie because it was (and is) advertised as another summer horror flick with a creepy genetically mutated monster that kills people. I was very happy that this wasn't one of those movies and something much much more about morality and science, among MANY other things.

more so than peoples own insecurities. the whole point of a horror genre is that it should make you uncomfortable. What i liked about this was that it wasn't explicit if you think about it. it was no rape scene from Last House On The Left. It wasn't gross full of weird alien vagina juices. it was more disturbing in concept. it didn't present itself grotesque.

the human centipede made me cum buckets ;D

haven't seen it. I'll probably wait until dvd or something.

Entertainment Weekly gave it an A- so there aren't all bad reviews out there. I'd like to see it, but I'm a coward when it comes to horror films.

I never seen cube, but heard good things, should I see cube first or is spliced a more refined version of the two

i am not sure what you mean by refined. Cube and Splice are two very different movies. I really really really like cube. a lot. it's a movie about character archs. you should really check that out as soon as you can.
